The course
Nominated best new course in the U.S. in 1989 and named to Golf Week's Top 50 in the Southeast, River Hills makes you plan and hit every shot in the bag.
Tom Jackson designed River Hills in 1988 as a thinking player's course, and it holds up. The front nine winds through a highland pine forest guarded by fairway and waste bunkers, and the fast, sloping Champion Bermuda greens can hand you a 100 foot putt if you miss your spot. The course claims six signature holes, headlined by the 7th, a 527 yard par 5 that drops downhill through a double dogleg around large fairway bunkers, with water on both sides of the fairway, to an elevated and well trapped green.
The back nine literally has a river running through it, winding past fairways, marshes, and large cypress trees. From the tips the par 72 stretches to 6923 yards with a 140 slope, with members and ladies tees at 6401 and 4414. Afterward, the large colonial style clubhouse offers a full service restaurant, a pub area with a large screen TV, and a spacious back patio overlooking the course.
