The course

Whispering Pines sits a half mile from Ocean Boulevard on the grounds of the old Myrtle Beach Air Force course, now owned by the city. It is one of only three Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary courses in South Carolina.

This Pete Dye design from 1984 delivers pure golf in a preserved natural setting, with cool ocean breezes drifting in from a half mile away. Its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status is a distinction shared by only two other courses in South Carolina. The military history shows in details like the Sabre Jet displayed over the putting green, and while the 16th hole runs beside the airport, the rest of the fairways are pristine with no housing or out of bounds backyards. A recent remodel added new TifEagle greens.

The teeth of this par 72 are its par 4s: five of them measure over 390 yards from the white tees, and from the blues you face seven par 4s over 400 yards plus a sharp double dogleg par 5 of 567 yards. The championship tees play 6771 yards with a 73.2 rating and 129 slope. The men's tees measure 6245 yards at 70.9 and 126, and the ladies' tees play 5176 yards at 70.6 and 123.
